Phlebotomy Technician Certificate

The Phlebotomy program’s curriculum encompasses a combination of general education courses, online lectures, in-person laboratory sessions, and clinical experience in a hospital or clinic. The courses must be completed within the time frame shown in the recommended plan of study, and students in this program are required to be enrolled full-time. Upon successful completion of the prescribed curriculum, the student will be eligible to take an examination for the national board of certification and will be prepared to work in a variety of clinical settings, including hospital laboratories, physicians’ offices, clinics, and blood donor centers. 

The admission requirements into the Phlebotomy program are:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Have completed and met the requirements for admission to WNCC
  • Have taken the ACCUPLACER® if required
  • Upon admission to the program students must provide the following:
    • records of flu and COVID-19 vaccination
    • titer test for Hepatitis B, varicella, MMR, meningococcal, and others as required by clinical facility
    • tuberculosis (TB) testing
    • compliance with the MLT program criminal background screening policy and the MLT program drug and alcohol screening policy

Program Outcomes

At the conclusion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the health care delivery system and medical terminology
  • Demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of body systems and anatomic terminology to relate major areas of the clinical laboratory to general pathological conditions associated with the body systems
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of age-specific or psycho-social considerations involved in the performance of phlebotomy procedures on various age groups of patients 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of specimen collection and specimen integrity in the delivery of patient care
  • Demonstrate knowledge of collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions necessary, and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents
  • Follow standard operating procedures to collect specimens via venipuncture and capillary (dermal) puncture
  • Demonstrate understanding of requisitioning, specimen transport, and specimen processing
  • Demonstrate knowledge of quality assurance and quality control in phlebotomy
  • Demonstrate ability to perform common waived laboratory testing
  • Communicate (verbally and non-verbally) adequately and appropriately in the workplace

Program Requirements

The Phlebotomy program consists of 16.5 credit hours, all of which apply toward the AAS degree program for medical laboratory technician and constitute the first semester of study for the program.
