MEDT - 1010 Fundamentals of Phlebotomy Co-requisite(s): Admission into the Phlebotomy (PBT), and/or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program This course provides basic and advanced instruction on techniques, procedures, equipment, and issues pertaining to the proper collection of blood specimens for routine clinical laboratory testing. Emphasis is placed on infection prevention, universal precautions, proper patient identification, specimen processing, patient complications, arterial draw, unusual tests, non-blood specimens, quality assurance, and legal issues. MLT students who possess an active Phlebotomy Technician, PBT (ASCP) certificate through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) may waive this course. Laboratory is concurrent with lecture.
