ENGL - 2180 Film as Literature

Prerequisite(s): ENGL-1010
Satisfies a humanities requirement for an Associate of Arts degree.

This course presents film as a kind of text that must be read and interpreted, much like traditional literature. In this course students will study movies as a way to sharpen critical thinking and writing skills. Through the careful examination of films spanning various genres, eras, and cultures, this course will examine the world of cinema not only as a visual spectacle but as a medium that rivals traditional literature in its ability to tell stories, develop characters, convey complex themes, experiment with form, deliver social commentary, and captivate an audience. Students will learn how to recognize and analyze the artistic choices that define innovative films, directors, time periods, and movements, and what some of the connections are between film theory and literary theory. This course will also investigate how the moving image today shapes our views of reality and impacts society.
